Seniors Brandon Bermingham and Emma Norton have been named the recipients of the Suffolk Zone Award for Comsewogue High School for the 2023-2024 school year.
Brandon Bermingham is a two-sport athlete (football and wrestling) and was the captain of the wrestling team. He is a member of Athletes Helping Athletes and the student representative for the Board of Education. Brandon has an 89 GPA and 100 in Physical Education. Emma Norton is the captain and goalie for the girls soccer team, and she has been the boys basketball manager for the past two years. Additionally, Emma is a member of Athletes Helping Athletes, the Italian Honor Society and National Honor Society. Emma has 96.62 GPA and 100 in physical education.
The Suffolk Zone Award is presented to two athletes each school year at each high school in Suffolk County. The Suffolk Zone chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance presents one female and male from each Suffolk County High School an award based on: 1) Physical Education Achievement; 2) Scholastically Sound; 3) Outstanding Character; 4) Physical Education Leader; and 5) School-wide Activities Leader. To be eligible for the award, the student must earn an “A” average or has earned above a “90” in high school Health and Physical Education classes. The selected student must also earn an overall grade point average of 3.0 (“B”) on a 4.0 (“A”) scale at the completion of their 11th grade year and continues at their potential during their senior year.
The selected recipients must demonstrate responsible, empathetic and culturally responsive personal and social skills, including confidence, character, civility, collaboration, and citizenship. They also must be a leader in Health and Physical Education class, demonstrate the ability to accept responsibility for regular class tasks and make an outstanding effort to be a self-directed learner, critical thinker, problem solver, and effective communicator.
Brandon and Emma each demonstrate a positive attitude toward instructional activities and provide support for the success of others. They each are also an active leader and are productive citizens both in and outside the school as an officer in a Health or PE organization, President of a HE or PE related club, an active member of a school or community group, a volunteer for a support group such as Special Olympics, Athletes Helping Athletes, or Best Buddies, and/or captain of a team/club.
