Students at Terryville Road Elementary School in the Comsewogue School District recently experienced a showcase of the many possibilities for their futures during the school’s 15th annual Career Day. About 25 presenters representing a variety of occupations and fields met with students, answered questions and held demonstrations exhibiting the work they do every day. This year’s presenters included Racecar Driver Alyssa Paprocky, Actress Beth Dimino and New York State Assemblyman Edward Flood, in addition to nurses, business owners, police officers and other professionals.
“Career Day is always an amazing opportunity for students to get excited about the prospects for their futures,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Quinn. “We’re trying to show students the many opportunities they have, while they’re still in school. We want to make sure students can learn what they’re interested in before they graduate from our District. We’re really proud and we’re really appreciative of all the community members who come out and share their knowledge with our students.”
To add to the excitement, students researched a career of their choosing before the event and dressed up in its uniform or attire to meet with professionals in their respective fields.
Students learned about the day in the life of a lawmaker from New York State Assemblyman Edward Flood, who is a Comsewogue School District alumnus, and discovered the power of local politics from speaking with Town of Brookhaven Councilman Jonathan Kornreich.
Students interested in a career in entertainment were given the opportunity to speak with Actress Beth Dimino, who used to teach in the Comsewogue School District, and Rachel Armistead, an acting teacher and casting director who walked students through the process of casting a film or TV show.
An exciting addition to this year’s Career Day was Racecar Driver Alyssa Paprocky, who showed students her racecar and let them sit in the driver’s seat.
The District ties Career Day into its career programs and our occupational education training that continues in middle school and high school. When students are in high school, they can also gain hands-on instruction in their chosen fields by joining Comsewogue High School career academies in business academy, medicine, education and other fields.
