Comsewogue School District is proud to welcome Mrs. Nichole Makarius, an esteemed educator with over 12 years of experience, to our leadership team as the new principal of Norwood Elementary School. It is without a doubt that Mrs. Makarius will bring a wealth of knowledge and passion to our school community.
Mrs. Makarius is a proud graduate of Comsewogue and is excited to return to her roots in this leadership role. She believes deeply in nurturing the whole child through personalized education, ensuring that every student thrives academically, socially, and emotionally. Her approach to education emphasizes tailoring learning experiences to meet the individual needs, interests, and challenges of each student. Mrs. Makarius views a collaborative school environment as the key to creating successful educational experiences. She believes partnerships with families and community members are essential to enriching a child’s educational journey.
Prior to joining Norwood Elementary, Mrs. Makarius held various impactful roles at PS333 in Manhattan, including special education coordinator, teacher of special education, math, and academic reading intervention across grades K-8. Her tenure included serving on numerous committees, such as the District Liaison for Special Education and Academic Intervention Services (AIS), ELA and Math Data Support Specialist, and Lead Team Member for Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RTI).
Mrs. Makarius holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Inclusive Elementary/Middle Childhood Education and Mathematics, along with a Master of Arts degree in Adolescence Special Education with an Annotation in Severe and Multiple Disabilities, as well as a Master of Arts degree in School Building and District Leadership. Her unwavering dedication to education and lifelong learning resonates throughout her personal and professional life, guiding her decision-making with values at the forefront.
Beyond her professional achievements, Mrs. Makarius finds joy in family life, sharing two daughters with her husband. She enjoys spending time with friends, cooking homemade Italian meals and tending to her garden outdoors.
